August 2004 Citizen Inspections
The Los Alamos Study Group is planning a coordinated series of
citizens' inspections of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and
Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) on August 2, 4, and 5, 2004.
For details about these events see the schedule.
The August 2 and 4 virtual inspections will include an overview
of the U.S. nuclear weapons complex and will focus on Los Alamos
(August 2) and Sandia (August 4) with a special emphasis on new
weapons designs, plutonium pit production, and related environmental
concerns. The August 5 inspections at Los Alamos will be independent
on-site fact finding missions, carried out by concerned citizens
to gather information on current and proposed nuclear weapons activities,
for the purpose of monitoring the status of Los Alamos' compliance
with international treaties and international and domestic legal
obligations. On August 2 and 4 we will provide all interested inspectors
with the background information and they will need to conduct inspections
of LANL alongside us on August 5 and afterwards.
These inspections will be the first in a new quarterly series of
citizens' inspections organized by the Los Alamos Study Group, focusing
on nuclear weapons development in New Mexico and beyond. The next
citizen inspections will be held during the week of November 7th,
and the inspections to follow will be held in the first week of
February, 2005. Mark your calendars!
