Plutonium pit production training facility opens at Savannah River Site

The National Nuclear Security Administration has taken another step forward to prepare the Savannah River Site for plutonium pit production. A facility to teach machining skills and proficiencies to future operators at the Savannah River Plutonium Processing Facility recently opened, the National Nuclear Security Administration and Savannah River Nuclear Solutions announced Aug. 15. The National Nuclear Security Administration is the semi-autonomous Department of Energy office responsible for the production of nuclear weapon materials. Savannah River Nuclear Solutions is the manager and operator of the Savannah River Site. The newly opened facility is called the Machining Training Facility.
