Letters to the Editor:
Be mindful: Pit expansion has consequences

Apr 15, 2026

By Harland Soper

As reported in The Santa Fe New Mexican (“Pit production review draft released,” April 10), the federal government just released a draft review of the environmental impact for the production of plutonium pits, including those built in Los Alamos.

Be mindful, because these pits are the device that triggers a nuclear weapon designed to execute mass killings. Be mindful that we rationalize this weapon of mass killing as a necessary deterrent to others from their use, such as rogue countries and terrorist groups somewhere else in the world. Be mindful that the greatest threat to the use of these nuclear weapons comes from the president of the United States intent on wiping out an entire civilization at his whim. Be mindful of those, who by their support of President Donald Trump, allow his hand to hover over the nuclear button, believing it is normal and appropriate. Be mindful that MAGA Republicans in Congress and the Senate have relinquished their responsibility to govern to Trump so he can push that button at his command.

Finally, be mindful that all those states where pits are scheduled to be built intend to deposit their nuclear waste here in New Mexico. Be mindful and have a nice day.
