Dear friends and colleagues --

Yesterday's news ("Installation of "Base" Capability to Produce 30 Plutonium Warhead Cores ("Pits") at Los Alamos To Be Delayed 4 Years, to 2030"), as well as NNSA's and LANL's implied (but still clandestine) plan to expand LANL pit production beyond the "nameplate" 30 pits per year, will no doubt lead to further revelations. Stay tuned. We will be heading to DC later this month for meetings on Capitol Hill and elsewhere, new analysis in hand.

1. "Nuclear Hotseat" interview

I (Greg) was recently interviewed by Libbe HaLevy on the weekly podcast she hosts, "The Nuclear Hotseat." The interview began with the question of why a nuclear disarmament organization might want to send someone to attend the upcoming "Nuclear Deterrence Summit" and how that came about, and branched out from there. Libbe was a great interviewer. The interview starts at about 12:50 and runs for about 41 minutes.

2. Ukraine war updates

Every day we pick a few updates, analyses -- and today an outstanding documentary film -- to help broaden understanding of this war, with a view to ending it as soon as possible.

We urge you to check them out, refer them to your friends, and make them part of the background study of groups you might belong to, or organize.

A lot is happening beneath the "fog." Russian offensives are increasing in tempo (see here and here). Ukraine is on the verge of being crushed (Douglas MacGregor; conclusory 1-minute excerpt). In a new escalation, the U.S. is now openly allowing Ukraine to launch attacks on Russia proper using U.S. missiles. The Russian response is that the longer range the weapons provided, the farther away the front lines have to be pushed.

Realistically, Russia will not be able to tolerate a hostile, militarized regime in Kiev for more reasons than ever, so the negotiations that could and should have happened in late 2021 with a view to bringing about neutrality will eventually have to start, if a wider war --and potentially a nuclear war -- is to be avoided. Indeed, negotiations have begun between the U.S. and Russia, with Russia rejecting the first U.S. proposal as a non-starter.

The perennially-warmongering and lying New York Times meanwhile offers wildly-inflated Russian casualty figures to prop up the failing narrative that a Ukraine "victory" is possible. When (not if) the Ukraine government falls, the repercussions to those backing it will be variously severe, in one form or another. The Biden Administration now needs look very hard, and do it quickly, for some way of the mess they created and keep expanding. The Administration now appears divided as to what to do. For the public here and in Europe, "Ukraine fatigue" set in long ago.

It is very important for more voices to join in opposing this war. Please do not underestimate the importance of a single candle in a dark cave.

In this regard, we have made ourselves available as a foil for the Santa Fe New Mexican to broach questions concerning this war. Their article may run as soon as tomorrow. Whatever it may say about us, it will be an opportunity for more people to speak up and take up actions to end this war. We'll send out the article when it appears. One ray of light is the February 19 "left-right" coalition action in Washington, as outlined in our last Bulletin. We urge everyone to oppose this war in every possible way.

Thank you for your attention,

Greg Mello, Los Alamos Study Group
