Study Group briefing and panel discussion on pit production, National Press Club, Washington DC, Nov. 13, 2024, 1-4 pm

Albuquerque, NM -
This coming Thursday, October 24, 2024, Greg Mello, director of the Los Alamos Study Group (about us), will provide a briefing to the Los Alamos community on the background and current status of the National Nuclear Security Administration's (NNSA's) program to restart production of plutonium warhead cores ("pits"). The event will be held at the SALA Event Center, 2551 Central Avenue (map), Los Alamos, from 6-8 pm.

Mr. Mello (bio) has been working on nuclear policy issues since the 1980s nationally, internationally, and in New Mexico. Since that time he has helped lead nongovernmental opposition to restarting pit production. Greg, sometimes accompanied with Study Group colleagues including his wife and partner Trish, has been a regular presence in congressional committee and executive branch offices for decades, in hundreds of private meetings and briefings. Greg and Trish were actively involved in all stages of the Nobel-Peace-Prize-winning effort to successfully negotiate the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

The event will be livestreamed on the SALA YouTube channel.

Plutonium Pit Production at LANL – A Community Briefing and Discussion

In this meeting Greg Mello, Los Alamos Study Group director, will provide detailed background and analysis regarding LANL’s new pit production mission, now accounting for more than one-third of NNSA expenditures at LANL.

We will discuss the purpose, need, projected budget, and some of the project impacts, as well as progress on the more permanent pit production facility in South Carolina.

Greg and his Study Group colleagues have been working in New Mexico, in Washington DC, and internationally on nuclear weapons issues since 1989.
